A museum has opened in Marrakesh, Morocco dedicated to celebrating the life and influence of Yves Saint Laurent.

It is also the first fashion museum to open in Africa and was once Saint Laurent’s former home in Morocco, which he bought because of his deep affection for the country.

The 4,000 sq m building includes permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, a research library with over 6,000 volumes, a 150-seat auditorium for lectures and films and a bookstore and terrace café. It will feature a conservation archive that will house drawing, clothing and haute couture accessories from the designer.

The exterior of the building is part textured and smooth and has been designed to resemble the warp and weft of fabric. To complement its surroundings, the entire building façade is made from deep orange terracotta with palm trees as the backdrop.

The Moroccan themes continue inside with the use of wood, stained glass windows and a palette of colours ranging from white and blue to canary yellow.

The opening of the Moroccan outpost also coincides with the launch of Saint Laurent’s Museum in Paris, his other home.
