A new wave of sophisticated multi-brand stores is emerging in China, designed to cater to an increasingly savvy demographic of young and affluent shoppers. One such has opened in Beijing’s popular Sanlitun area, conceived as a stylish concept store called Sanlipop.
The store is a collaborative effort between five friends who met while living in London and who shared a common vision to create a contemporary retail space featuring a tightly edited range of goods. The group enlisted Osaka-based architecture practice Ninkipen! to create the interior and the result is a minimalist aesthetic, infused with raw elements such as concrete, wood and brass, mixed with whimsical detailing.
Brick walls are dipped in white paint, while a bare ceiling and polished concrete flooring offer a contrast. The design has been conceived to allow the offerings to “pop out”. Catering to both male and female shoppers, the store carries a cool mix of products and brands and includes fashion from MaisonKitsuné, Band of Outsiders, BWGH, Jacquemus and Opening Ceremony as well as jewellery by Delfina Delettrez and EK Thongprasert and accessories and lifestyle products by Vlieger & Van Dam, (Malin+Goetz) and Aedle.
An espresso bar which serves certified fair trade coffee is included within the store.
