Department store retail is on the change with leading edge retailers looking to up the design pace by creating individual floors using different architects.

Rinascente in Rome, a 1.6m sq ft new opening in the city centre, has taken this approach – one that makes sense for a project of this scale. Rinascente has seen a total investment of 200m Euros, of which 74m was spent on renovation and refurbishment.

A total of five architect firms shaped the personality of the building inside and out. Vincent Van Duysen worked on the façade and the first and second floors that host women’s accessories, jewellery, eyewear and beauty. Universal Design Studio was responsible for the third floor’s denim bar and men’s ready-to-wear and footwear departments. Architect India Mahdavi created the backdrop for luxury ready-to-wear and footwear, while Paolo Lucchetta created a series of rooms for the fourth floor and CLS Architetti topped off the building’s sixth floor which hosts contemporary apparel, footwear and accessories.
