JOHN LEWIS UP TO OXFORD

John Lewis opens a new department store tomorrow in the expanded Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford. You could be mistaken for thinking that John Lewis was already in Oxford, but it has waited many years to find a space large enough for its needs.

The 120,000 sq ft store, set over three-levels, is a ‘small format’ John Lewis, stocking 55,000 products. The store also sees the launch of a new service – ‘The Experience Desk’. The shop has one fifth of its floor-space dedicated to services and experiences and will offer 21 different services, from travel advice to eye tests and children’s car seat fitting advice. Brand new elements will include a free personal styling service for men, free technology training workshops and the retailer’s first express Nail and Brow bar.

John Lewis has also embraced its local environment and community, incorporating famous Oxford resident Lewis Carroll into the store design. Carroll, famous for writing Alice in Wonderland, has more the 20 references throughout the store including a rabbit diving into a hole underneath a VM display of curtain rails. All employees, or Partners as they are called, have also been theatre-trained by The Oxford Playhouse to teach them the art of service.

The importance of in-store dining continues with a new Nordic concept, KuPP.

John Lewis continues to trial and launch new services in a market that has been increasingly difficult for department stores.
