A GIANT TOPSHOP FOR MANCHESTER

At 42,000 sq ft, the newly extended Topshop/Topman in Manchester’s Trafford Centre is the biggest in the chain, with the sole exception of the Oxford Circus flagship in central London.

This one now trades from two floors, it used to be one, and parent group Arcadia has added fashion brand Miss Selfridge to the mix – it has been given space alongside Topman on the ground floor.

The principal design element, however, is “the hub” a high, freestanding walled feature in the middle of the Topshop on the upper floor. The intention behind this one is that it helps to break down what is a very large space into manageable areas for shoppers, avoiding the wide open prairie look that bedevils so many retail occupiers of large spaces, whether in the fashion arena or otherwise.

Other features include a cash desk that has been squeezed into the space under the escalator on the ground floor and made to look very good and a range of services and accessories spaces at the back of the first floor.

And with it all, the store manages to keep a sense of freedom to move, a fine line to tread when laying out a fairly densely merchandised fashion store.
