CAMEMBERT: THE PLACE – THE SHOP

Arguably one of the most famous cheeses in the world, Camembert, has its own village, from which the names comes and its own dedicated shop.

Located in the heart of Normandy, Camembert is a picturesque village surrounded by rich, green countryside, cows and Norman wooden and brick farmhouses. It is also the location for the cheese-makers who are authorised to use the Camembert name.

MAISON DU CAMEMBERT

Although somewhat off the beaten track, in the Pays d’Auge, for cheese lovers, this is a pilgrimage that ends at the tourist office and Camembert store, La Maison du Camembert. Here, visitors can sample the local cheese from the various local producers and also try a complementary Calvados at the stand-up bar.

The store’s exterior has been designed to resemble the Camembert wooden cheese packaging and looks a little an askew version of New York’s Guggenhiem museum, on a smaller scale. The exterior is therefore circular and the roof has a raised lip to look like the lid has been opened.

On leaving the store, shoppers should also take the obligatory photo in front of the Camembert village sign.
