Hong Kong Shopping Mall Harbour City is famous in the city for its activations and this summer’s extravaganza has everyone bubbling with excitement.

The mall collaborated with Japanese contemporary artist Shinji Ohmaki to bring millions of soap bubbles to its outside space. His artwork called “10 million bubbles by Victoria Harbour” is the latest in a succession of pieces that form part of his “Memorial Rebirth” series which has toured 20 cities in Japan, Taiwan and Australia in the last 9 years.

The installation is the artist’s first public work in Hong Kong and consisted of a bubble machine that could produce more than 10,000 non-toxic soap bubbles a minute. The Hong Kong artwork was delivered by a three-metre-tall, six-level bubble pyramid that stood at the centre of the mall’s forecourt. The pyramid housed 45 separate bubble machines that pumped out more than 10 million bubbles during the individual performances that run from August 2 to 20.

The soap bubble work formed parts of a wider public events called “Bubble Up” which include flash mob music performances on the forecourt, a bubble blowing charity sale and how to take the best bubble picture classes.
